The Veterans Film Apprenticeship will work in conjunction with a new ground-breaking series Heroic Episodes
My friendship with Ret. Army Captain Leslie Nicole Smith has grown into our shared mission. Our close bond opened my world to other veterans and inspired me to create the Veterans Film Apprenticeship, Drone Training Program and to write my series, 'Heroic Episodes.' The series is based on true stories of veterans. My research includes nine years of interviews with military men and women of all branches of service and all wars. Our heroes stories include messages of bravery, hope and humanitarian acts. These stories are vast and often go untold. The apprenticeship and the series will work in conjunction to provide our heroes with camaraderie, jobs and most importantly, healing.
"I've cast so many veterans in my film projects who took an interest in the drones that we used during the filming process. Many of these veterans also expressed an interest in obtaining their Part 107 Commercial Drone License.
My goal is to help each and every one of these heroes train, prepare and test for their Part 107 License and guide them to find drone related jobs in the aviation and film industries."

Ret. Staff Sergeant, Brianna Felice, U.S. Army
"we're very mission oriented people and we don't stop until that mission is complete."
The VFA provides veterans the opportunity to train, prepare, and test for an FAA Part 107 Commercial Drone Pilot License and assists veterans with their pursuit of film and aviation industry jobs, including securing jobs on the production team of a groundbreaking veterans-centered TV series, Heroic Episodes.
In the first phase of the program, veterans will receive classroom instruction addressing FAA regulations, operating requirements, and procedures for flying drones. In the second phase of the program, veterans will participate in hands-on flight lessons. In the final phase of the program, veterans will prepare for the FAA 107 certification exam and attend career readiness coaching sessions.
As the saying goes, “The sky’s the limit,” and such a saying could easily serve as the VFA’s motto. The VFA effectively positions veterans to rejoin the workforce as commercial drone pilots in the film and aviation industry. The program also ventures beyond practical, tangible benefits to provide intangible benefits that standard drone pilot license courses lack, an approach that fosters post-traumatic growth. The program’s design reflects the understanding that post-traumatic growth can be facilitated in many ways, including disclosure of traumatic experiences, narrative development, and service.
As veterans advance through the apprenticeship program, VFA empowers them to share with others their trauma experiences in an empathic environment, to reshape their life narratives in a way that enables healing, and to serve as mentors to other trauma survivors. It is Lisa’s hope that VFA graduates will realize positive changes associated with post-traumatic growth: improvement in their relationships with others, exploration of new possibilities in their lives, and recognition of their personal strength.

I wrote The Shades, a short film about women who survived violence. I brought veterans on as part of the production's cast and crew.
In the film, women survivors spoke out on camera for the very first time about their assault as the military men and women stood alongside them demonstrating a strong support.
Advocates and counselors were also on set to help during this extremely emotional and cathartic experience.
Job opportunities in a fast growing industry.
The Multi-Billion dollar business of drones is estimated to grow up to 90 billion by 2025.

"film sets operate with a hierarchy and clear roles mirroring military structure"
Jody Austin, U.S. Air Force
"programs like this are important to us"
MSG Ariella Martinez, U.S. Air Force
"it's typically challenging for us veterans to transition into another line of work. There's nothing more collaborative than a movie set. These connections are also a major help to those that suffer from mental challenges developed in war time."
ITC Michele Keyes, U.S. Navy
"I think it's a great idea! There are so many job opportunities having a drone license...being part of a mission. We can work as a team or work on solo missions"

I've always loved to write. My pad and pen has helped me through the darkest times. Pouring my pain out onto paper has been a big part of my healing process. Most importantly, I love to share with others the very same writing process that has helped me to survive. Therefore, I've developed my writing program for veterans and survivors of trauma. Through my years of research, interviews and intimate talks with veterans and their families I've learned that trauma can be empowering instead of demoralizing.
I can't wait to share the power of writing with you! I'll visit your organization, perform my one woman show and teach you how to implement my writing program into your organization, VFW Post, school, class or group. I'll also include a Q&A segment in order to connect with the members of your organization and your community audience following each of my performances.
My writing program will offer survivors of violence, veterans and their families an alternative way to express their stories and to heal.
